I see Larry's problem.  I my case I went out into the field next to my 630m
antenna and scrapped away the grass down to bare soil in a 30" square.  This
allowed me to plop down the ground screen with some concrete stepping stones
to hold it right into the dirt.  In the winter I can just push the probe in
but in summer I had to pick up an old long shank wood auger at a garage
sale.  Using a drill motor and the auger I could then get the probe in
without too much trouble.   I think it's pretty clear this is primarily a
630m problem due to the very short loaded verticals employed. 

 

We're having an extended rain event here.  When it's over I'll make another
measurement to add to the earlier work.  I have graphs and photos on hand
so, since it seems there is some interest, I'll write up a short note with
the details and post them for all to see on my web page.  Give me a week or
so.
