I've actually heard many loud very distant NDB's during winter (last winter specifically) in and around the 400 KHz region around midday and early afternoon.  I recall one instance of hearing one from Winnipeg in December 2012 and was pretty shocked.  I had a similar experience with one in the Carolinas around the same time.  I suspect the same mechanism is at play...

It will be interesting and probably some other mechanism at play if you experience the same during midsummer...

Ken,

Noticed an interesting event with your signal last night - a gradual drop in SNR over about 30 minutes followed by two hours of no signal. I found the differing responses of various reporters interesting. AC0ZL and /12 saw gradual drops in SNR for about 30 minutes, most of your local "local" customers saw a sudden drop that remained relatively constant until the signal disappeared at 1008Z. KF5JIA showed a sudden drop of 12dB at 0940Z and then gradually recovered 9dB before the signal disappeared at 1008Z


The varying behavior by range seems to suggest the possibility of antenna changes but what actually happened?
