One other bit of information...as if we needed it...

My main "Elmer" Woody Davey, W7CJB, once, rather plaintively, mentioned 
to me that in his experience the overall noise level had risen steadily since 
he was first licensed in the 1930s. By the time I got to know him, beginning in 
about 1956, (a very good, and competent man) it was very noticeable and 
ubiquitous.

"Back then"...power-line and applicance-noise was almost unheard of and 
the local average noise level was very low, probably more like Ed's when his 
town population was still about 100.

Those days are long gone, unfortunately, but some of us can dream about 
them anyway.
