[600MRG] Regen Rx? I'm Missing Something?

For the last few days there have been postings regarding "regenerative receiver" design, etc.  I'm missing something - Answers to my  question might help me appreciate the reason for the recent interest in regen receivers -

In this day and age, what does the analog regenerative receiver bring to the table that a recent design SDR receiver, or for that matter, highly semi-digital / semi analog receiver does not offer?  As a nostalgic topic, great! I have no problem with that pursuit.  The antique "aficionado" can roll his own using traditional hollow-state technology, restore to some extent a classic regen, or construct an all solid state regen receiver employing the epitome of analog circuit design techniques.
