After a meter change over 5 years ago I started noticing AMBC interference
several times a day that would last about 5 seconds. I knew the previous
meter operated on 900 MHz and would respond when polled by a meter reader
that would drive by monthly. A bit of research indicated the new meter was
a smart meter that could be polled and operated remotely. It's called
TWACS (Two-Way Automatic Communication System ). This is just one of
multiple methods used for smart meters. I see a google search will now
give lots of hits so I won't go into detail of how it works.

Here's a link to a audio file I made years ago with spectrum lab in sferics
and tweeks mode. I do not remember what antenna I was using.

Only the strongest, about 5 second, burst of noise is heard on AMBC and
2200/630 meters when connected to my MF/LF receive antenna some distance
from the house.

I have found no smart gird/meter technology that uses LF frequencies like
PLC.

I made a smart meter yahoo group years ago when there was a lot of
discussion about meter interference but it never caught on.
