[600MRG] 600MRG Digest, Vol 69, Issue 7

In regard to the Monitor Sensors 630M transverter. I have been using one
here at WH2XZO for a couple of months with an Elad FDM DUO SDR radio. I
have also used the NDJT 100 watt amplifier driven by the 0 dBm of my TS590s
for over a year. Both work well and are easy ways to get on 630M.

The transverter appears very made. With about 14.3 volts from my power
supply, and driving it with about 4.5 watts on 160M, the Monitor Sensor
transverter averages about 65-70 watts out and draws 11 amps. It doesn't
get hot at that power level. You can look at my WSPR reports and see that
it is stable. The main advantage for me is that I can run it into a higher
SWR or, with antenna failure, even a dead short or open the manual claims.
As John, KB5NJD /WG2XIQ said, "I like that it's a bullet proof unit. Being
able to work into trashy loads is a real plus."

Right now I'm running it into an iced up loading coil at the base of my
630M umbrella antenna. And I haven't changed the tap of my base coil now
for over a month- no variometer here. I use a separate receive antenna to
the receive antenna input of the FDM-DUO so I can't comment on the
transceiver's receive.

You pay for the protection the transceiver offers. It's a lot more
expensive than the NDJT amp which never failed when I had a very temporary
high SWRs. The NDJT amp did fail instantly a couple times when, my cockpit
error, I drove the amp with 160M instead of 630M. The transverter can
handle that without damage.

The downside is that I'm giving up 2 db or more ERP by using the
transverter instead of the amp which can deliver up to about 120 watts out
at about 27 volts. For me that's a worthwhile trade off for the peace of
mind that if my somewhat klutzy antenna system fails I will not be off the
air until the amplifier is repaired.
