[600MRG] WG2XIQ U3 Experiment - loading a 102" pipe on 630m

Hi Mike,

While the PA in use is more than capable of 100w, I have serious concern about the sustainability of the system at that level.  More than likely I will ramp the system up to about 30 watts tonight and see how it goes.  I think it is reasonable to think that consistent 200 mile range can be achieved by  a small system like this and there have been numerous stories attesting to that fact, some cited by me in my initial discussions.

Initial data from AA5AM has just started to flow in.  Scott is 51 miles away from me an indicates he is using the unmatched 160m inv L in lieu of the usual 600m inv L.  Scott's first report is -6 which would be easy CW copy as well as most of digital modes we have been playing with.

The coils are wound with #14 teflon insulated silver plated copper.  One on a 5 gallon home depot bucket and the other is a 6 inch cardboard tube that i already had windings on for another application.  I will take measurements on L and C of the antenna and coil prior to disassembly as i ran out of time yesterday afternoon and its cold and windy today.  Initial calcs show that this pipe probably needs around 850 uH to resonate.  Its direct fed and it worked out to 51 -j14 ohms without any additional parallel capacitance.  The radial system is questionable.  It was the original radial system installed at this location in 2000 and had around 70, 45-50 foot radials at that time in addition to several ground rods.  I abandoned the site many years ago for the better, bigger radial field and the state of those radials is called into question.  I suspect many are failed or gone.  When taking measurements prior to take down, I will determine system
resistance and draw some conclusions about the state of the system.  I doubt it will be very accurate.

John XIQ

It would be interesting to hear how it plays with 100w into the feedline and regular CW. If you can pull off a 200 mile distance from you during daylight that would make that a decent local antenna that takes up zip for space. What is under it for radials? What gauge wire for the loading coil? Transformer coupled or cap match to ground at the feedpoint? Awesome you are doing these tests with the short verticals :-)
