On a related note, I've been trying to find out what ship-to-ship CW contact distances were typical around 500 kHz.  The antennas and counterpoise/ground conditions are probably better than most hams would be able to accomplish, but it could give us a benchmark.  My 50 watt marine reserve 500 kc transmitter is meant to feed a relatively short wire antenna so it could be a reasonable comparison.
