Gentlemen:

     At 500 kHz, the sky wave is almost always due to
E-layer refraction.  There are articles scattered through
the IEEE Transactions on Broadcast that may be of some
use.  However, I have not seen any modern book that deals
with MF sky wave.  My guess is that you would be more
likely to find a good coverage of the subject in some
older book (pre WW II).
