Well it happened again.

Freezing fog this morning iced up the antenna and the coil arced over.

This time I was watching when it happened. The SWR was a bit high but 
not near high enough to trip the SWR protection circuit. Suddenly the 
SWR spiked up and that was the end of the coil.

I'll have to wait for less wind and warmer temps to drop the thing down 
and inspect the damage. If it can be easily repaired, I'll try to put it 
back up, but that is unlikely.

It is clear that building a center load coil that will survive my winter 
WX and still meet weight/wind load restrictions won't be possible.

Even though it will mean about a 1 dB loss of signal, I will have to 
revert to base loading and a huge ATU doghouse in the grass to survive 
the local environment. This won't happen until spring or early summer.
