I build my own wooden boxes and put on a few coats of spar varnish to 
make 'em look pretty and water proof. I use a flat roof with a overhang 
with a hinged door under that overhang. Weatherstrip seals the door. You 
could build them to look like bird houses minus the birdie opening ;-) I 
use steel screws and glue to hold it all together. Suppose you could use 
some fancy mitered joints so no metal is used. Spar varnish lasts many 
years around here and is EZ to slop on some new coats later on to make 
it look all purdy again :-)
